The whale that died and then washed up on Martha’s Vineyard on January 28 was a three-year-old female identified in the New England Aquarium’s North Atlantic right whale catalog as 5170.

This is the first right whale known to have died after suffering injuries that officials say were caused by commercial fishing gear in Maine.

The death is noteworthy because of the arguments and lawsuits filed back and forth between Maine lobstermen and environmental activists over the impact of the fishery on the species, estimated to number about 360 individual animals. Of this estimate, fewer than 70 females are actively reproductive, according to scientists.
