ALPENA – The 18th Annual Fly Fishing Tour (F3T) is back on the road with a fantastic lineup of short films that are sure to get you excited for the upcoming season.

The F3T is the original and largest fly fishing event of its kind.

“This is the first time the event will be in Northeast Michigan,” said Taylor Witulski, who owns MothBear Outfitters, the host and main sponsor of the event. “It’s collaborative to get like-minded people in the same room and see what kind of interest we have here in the Alpena/Northeast Michigan area in terms of fly fishing.”

Join other anglers and outdoor enthusiasts for an entertaining evening of fishing on Saturday, February 24 at the Great Lakes Marine Heritage Center in Alpena.

Tickets are $25 and include a baseball hat and swag bag. Proceeds from this event will go to the Headwaters Chapter of Trout Unlimited to help support local projects in northern Michigan.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the 10,000-square-foot exhibit space will be open for attendees to tour and learn about the history of local shipwrecks among other educational exhibits.

At 5:30 p.m., you can enter the stage area for an introduction and some guest speakers.

The movie will start at 6pm and will last for approximately two hours. There will be a short 5-10 minute break in the middle of the show. The film will end around 8:10pm and a raffle and door prizes will be announced at the end of the show. The event is scheduled to conclude at 8:30 p.m.

There will be an opportunity to talk with some local fishing guides as well as check out some gear from MothBear Outfitters and Trout Kamp Coffee during the event. Drinks and food are scheduled to be available with proceeds also going to TU’s Headwaters Chapter.

Local sponsors include MothBear Outfitters of Alpena, Rivers East Fly Fishing of Oscoda, Kevin Wray Financial Services of Pinconning, Ausable River Outfitters of Mio, and True North Trout of Petoskey.

“Some other locals have offered support, like Pepsi in Lachine donated drinks to support the event, and we are getting some pizza donated by Mancino,” Witulski said. “We’ve also gotten some financial donations from people who are fly fishing. Tarkington Family Dentistry has put up some money to help hold the event in Alpena, as well as some other companies that offer financial counseling services.”

Witulski talked about creating MothBear Outfitters as an online store based in Alpena.

“My wife and I started MothBear about two years ago,” he said. “We operate our shipping facility out of the second building on our property. We have a lot of things in stock, from T-shirts, flies, fishing gear, and we have a coffee brand, Trout Kamp Coffee Co.

Proceeds from every bag of coffee they sell go to the Great Lakes Chapter of Trout Unlimited to help protect cold-water species, restore rivers and streams, and keep invasive species out of the Great Lakes and surrounding waters.

He said they have plans to eventually have a storefront, but for now they are operating entirely online, which is going well.

“We ship all over the country,” he said. “We have a decent following here in Michigan, but most of our orders, right now, come from out of state.”
