The Kuala Lumpur to Singapore Changi route was the busiest international route in 2023, according to aviation data firm.

It tops the OAG ranking – shown on a world map – which is produced by measuring the routes with the highest volume of scheduled airline seats in both directions.

Last year, there were 4,891,952 seats available on Kuala Lumpur to Singapore Changi flights, putting it ahead of Cairo to Jeddah, which came in second on the list with 4,795,712 seats. In third place was Hong Kong, versus Taipei, with 4,568,280 seats.

Meanwhile, London Heathrow to JFK ranked eighth, with 3,878,590 seats.

The busiest domestic route in 2023 was Jeju to Seoul (13,728,786), and the busiest domestic route in the US was Honolulu to Kahului (3,612,212).

The map above reveals the busiest international flight routes for 2023, according to OAG, which calculated the rankings based on the number of scheduled airline seats.

The rest of the 10 busiest international routes for 2023 were from Seoul Incheon to Osaka Kansai (4th, 4,218,484); Seoul Incheon to Tokyo Narita (5th, 4,155,418); Dubai to Riyadh (VI, 3,990,076); Jakarta to Singapore Changi (VII, 3,910,502); Bangkok to Singapore Changi (9th, 3,478,474), and Bangkok to Seoul Incheon (10th, 3,362,968).

Comparing the results to its 2019 ranking, OAG said half of the 10 busiest international routes did not make the top 10 in 2019.

These flights were from Cairo to Jeddah (second), Seoul Incheon to Osaka Kansai (fourth), Seoul Incheon to Tokyo Narita (fifth), Dubai to Riyadh (sixth), and Bangkok to Incheon (tenth).

JFK Airport from New York to London Heathrow was ranked eighth (above) in the busiest international flight route rankings, with 3,878,590 seats.

In second place in the domestic ranking was Chitose Airport in Hokkaido versus Tokyo Haneda with 11,936,302 seats.

It is followed by Fukuoka to Tokyo Haneda in third place with 11,264,229 seats, with OAG noting: “There is only a 6 percent gap in capacity between second and third place.”

The rest of the ten local routes consist of Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City (4th, 10883555); Melbourne to Sydney (V, 9342312); Beijing to Shanghai Hongqiao (VI, 8,355,225); Tokyo Haneda to Okinawa Naha (VII, 7,982,218); Jeddah to Riyadh (8th, 7,902,142); Mumbai to Delhi (9th, 7,276,430), and Jakarta to Denpasar-Bali (10th, 7,190,961).

OAG added that Jakarta to Denpasar is the only route among the 10 busiest domestic routes that did not rank in the top 10 in 2019.

The Los Angeles to San Francisco route was the busiest route in the US in 2019, but fell to sixth place in 2023 with a 33 percent drop in capacity.
