The best day for your hair is just a mouthful away.

Nutritionists have revealed how to eat for healthier hair, as following a proper diet can improve problems from hair loss to dry strands.

But besides eating the right foods, nourishing your overall body is just as important, registered dietitian Amanda Sauceda told Shape.

“It’s important to make sure your body is getting enough calories,” she said, referring to the suggested dietary guideline of 2,000 calories per day. “Your body needs energy for hair growth and to produce the hormones needed for healthy hair, so make sure you meet your basic calorie needs.”

As for specific foods that can lead to healthy tresses, Sauceda and other experts said wild salmon is the best choice because of its high-quality protein content.

Registered dietitian Frances Largeman-Roth told the magazine that salmon also contains other nutrients like marine collagen, omega-3 and zinc as well as protein to add to hair health.

“Hair is made of protein, specifically keratin, so it makes sense that we need to consume an adequate amount of protein in our diet to support healthy hair growth,” she explained.

Largeman-Roth also described wild salmon — sustainably caught, usually in Alaska — as the option with the highest vitamin D content, and suggested eating it twice a week.

Of course, salmon has been called a superfood for more than just healthy hair. As a staple of the Mediterranean diet, recently named the best diet in the world, salmon has a wide range of benefits beyond hair, including prevention of cancer, dementia and heart disease.

Another study found that eating just two servings of fish, such as salmon, can reverse the damage done to the body by fast food.

However, salmon wasn’t the only superfood on their list. Almonds, walnuts, eggs, citrus fruits, peeled chicken, and legumes are also beneficial for hair health.
