People have just realized the scary truth of what would happen to the Earth if it lost oxygen for just five seconds

A new video has sent seismic waves through social media, revealing the terrifying truth of what would happen to Earth if it lost all of its oxygen for just five seconds.

While most humans can hold their breath for a long time, the disappearance of this vital gase would throw our world into chaos.

Some of the consequences, like the disappearance of Earth’s protective ozone layer, won’t be a surprise to many, but the prolific TikTok user who detailed this hypothetical doomsday scenario has dropped some surprises.

Even with the sun still shining on our planet, for example, you’re unlikely to ever see any of these fast-paced catastrophes, as the world will turn to darkness.

“At first, your body probably won’t notice,” says Thomas Mulligan, who uses @mulligan.tv on the platform.

Mulligan added: “But you will notice it, when the sky turns completely black, because there is no oxygen in the atmosphere to scatter light rays from the sun.”

Mulligan, who is originally from Vancouver, Canada, is mostly known for his videos about outer space, technology, the future, and famous scientific figures like Albert Einstein and Carl Sagan.

As of this writing, the twenty-something has amassed an audience of nearly 963,000 followers on the platform, fascinated by his short explanations and scientific trivia.

Any form of transportation that relies on combustion, the TikToker pointed out

The TikToker noted that any form of transportation that relies on combustion would “immediately stop working.” What’s even more dangerous, he said, is that the ozone layer will also disappear, causing everyone and everything to start the cooking process.

Mulligan — who has made a video about how to really survive a zombie apocalypse, the “Kardashev Scale” of advanced alien civilizations, and more — teased the second-order effects of the mass disappearance of oxygen on Earth.

“Any form of transportation that relies on combustion will immediately stop working, causing planes to fall from the sky and millions of cars to stop working,” the TikToker noted.

Even more alarming, he said, “The ozone layer will also disappear, causing everyone and everything to start the cooking process.”

While humans will only feel and hear these sweeping, earth-shattering effects in these new dark conditions, Mulligan said that soon the entire global population will lose other of their five senses as well.

He explained that the human eardrum would burst due to the change in atmospheric air pressure resulting from the vacuum of oxygen disappearance.

But perhaps the biggest surprise in this scenario is that the entire planet would begin to rapidly contract, imploding in on itself from the crust down, at least according to Mulligan.

His thinking includes a bit of geochemistry and plate tectonics.

“Since the Earth’s crust is made up of 45% oxygen, it would completely collapse as well,” Mulligan told his TikTok followers.

“Everyone and everything will immediately begin to fall toward the center.”

What will happen to the Earth when the Sun dies?

Five billion years from now, the Sun is said to have grown into a red giant star, 100 times larger than its current size.

Eventually, it will expel gas and dust to form a “shell” that accounts for up to half its mass.

The core will become a small white dwarf star. This will shine for thousands of years, illuminating the atmosphere to form a ring-shaped planetary nebula.

While this transformation will change the solar system, scientists are not sure what will happen to the third rock from the sun.

We already know that our Sun will be larger and brighter, so it will likely destroy any life on our planet.

But it is uncertain whether the Earth’s rocky core will survive.
