Orvis launches the fourth generation Helios Fly fishing rod

Orvis, the family-owned and operated outdoor retailer and leading manufacturer of modern fly rods, has released its next generation of Helios rods, which Orvis states: “They are four times more accurate than their pioneering predecessor, the Helios 3 (H3), and are 25 percent stronger and 10 percent lighter.” In the hand, resulting in an intuitive fly rod that defines a new era in fly rod manufacturing.

“Helios rods are what people think of when they think of Orvis’s innovation and leadership in fly fishing,” said Orvis President Simon Perkins. “We had something really special with Helios 3, and we wanted to challenge ourselves with something even better. And because our Rod Shop staff is the best in the world, the result was revolutionary.

Designed and manufactured by designers, engineers and rod builders in Manchester, VT, the new Helios offers greater ring strength and reduced rod tip displacement when casting. The result is a rod that “delivers more accurate casting than competitors, and tracks four times better than the industry-leading Helios 3,” Orvis said. Orvis’s network of professional guides and anglers in seven countries, many of whom were part of the retailer’s official testing process, endorse the rod.

“The new Helios is a reimagining of what is possible in a fly rod and its ability to deliver the ultimate angler experience. Four times more accurate than the industry-leading H3 indicator is no exaggeration,” said Sean Combs, director of fly fishing design and development at Orvis. We’ve built the tools to measure what our industry has historically been measured by sentiment. This rod is where instinct and innovation meet. The result is the most precise rod in the world. We know it when we throw it, and we see it in the data.

Helios is available in two series, Distance (D) and Quality (F). The D Series provides increased line speed, lift and stored energy, and is available in various sizes, from 4-weight for small trout to 14-weight for saltwater billfish. The F Series features enhanced increased sensitivity for precise presentations and coil protection, and is available in sizes from 2wt to 8wt.

“It’s fun to think about Orvis as a startup company in the 1850s, and how Charles F. Orvis wanted to give someone a tool that would introduce them to the natural world in a way that would change their life,” Perkins said. “That’s really what this new generation of Helios does. It makes any angler their best. And when you’re at your best, you want to go out and live unforgettable moments on the water.

The Helios fly rod kit is available online and at select independent fly rods and Orvis retail stores.
