Opportunity to manage and conserve coastal fisheries
This volunteer role requires a candidate who can take a balanced approach to the care of our seas, assessing the priority and importance of all users and stakeholders. It is essential that candidates have good local knowledge of the IFCA area to which they are applying. IFCA members contribute their knowledge and experience to provide sustainable management of their IFCA region.
The MMO is also accepting applications from both current and former General Members of the IFCA who are approaching the end of their ten-year term as well as members who have left having already served a ten-year term. Applications from these members will be considered alongside all other applicants in a fair open competitive process and they will be appointed on the basis of merit to ensure a fair balance in sector representation.
The role of the General Member at the IFCA
IFCA members contribute their knowledge and expertise to provide sustainable management of the coastal marine area in their IFCA region. IFCA appointees are legally required to consider all local fishing and marine conservation interests in the waters of the IFCA region in a balanced manner, taking full account of the needs of the IFCA region. Appointees should be aware that they are part of the committee and should not consider themselves to represent only one area of particular interest within the IFCA region.
As a General Member of the IFCA, you will have the opportunity to contribute your knowledge and experience to committee meetings to help shape and guide the work of the IFCA.
This membership puts local people in the leadership of fisheries management and is an exciting opportunity to shape coastal fisheries development in your area.
As an IFCA Committee Member, you will work in a team with others, helping to ensure:
• Marine fisheries resources are used in a sustainable manner and balanced with the need to protect the marine environment or promote its recovery from the effects of exploitation
• Balancing the different needs of those working in the exploitation of marine fisheries and marine resources
• Achieving the goals of preserving marine protection areas
Although these appointments are unpaid, some local authorities pay expenses and allowances.
We strive for a balanced membership across various interest groups, including but not limited to those with commercial, recreational and environmental interests. To help maintain this balance MMOs seek to set the following.
