Earlier this month, we got our first look at the nominees for The Game Awards 2023. While we were happy to see Nintendo getting some well-deserved love (including two GOTY titles), much of the online conversation in the following days was about… The Best Indie Game category, and specifically, Dave The Diver’s inclusion in it.

Despite the game’s aesthetic and mechanics, the title was actually developed by MintRocket – a subsidiary of billion-dollar South Korean publisher Nexon. If games like this are now considered indie games, where do we draw the line? That’s the exact question that Mr TGA himself, Geoff Keighley, attempted to address in a recent Twitch Q&A session and his answer was… predictably balanced.

Somewhat circumventing the question of whether he Kelly believes Dave the Diver should be given independent status, and Kelly stated that “independence can mean different things to different people,” before explaining, “We defer to our jury (…) to determine whether or not it’s something independent.” . . However, regarding the match in question, Kelly continued:

I think this is a fair debate and debate about “is this game truly independent or not”, and you can argue it either way. It’s independent in spirit and it’s a small game, I don’t know what the budget is but I think it’s a relatively small budget game, but it’s from a larger entity, while there are other games on that list that belong to much smaller studios.

As a reminder, the other games nominated for this category are COCOON, Dredge, Sea of Stars, and Viewfinder.

The host and producer made it clear that he has no problem with people agreeing or disagreeing with the TGA’s picks, even noting that he’s “open to thinking and moving forward, how do you define this category?” Be Changing, and given the level of discussion on this particular topic over the past few weeks, it’s clear that the industry is going to have to address these labels if it’s going to move forward.

Be sure to check out the full Twitch Q&A to hear Keighley’s full answer. If you want to skip the rest of the chat and jump straight into this discussion, we recommend starting at around the 00:27:10 mark.
