Since my job keeps me tied to my computer for more hours than I’d like to admit, I like to spend a good amount of my free time outdoors, away from screens. But, being the tech savvy I am, I also like to track what I’m doing, whether it’s running, hiking, biking or skiing.
That’s why I was really impressed with the Garmin Epix 2, currently on sale for $499 at Best Buy. This is 40% off its regular price. This smartwatch accurately tracked me whether I was on top of a mountain or running a half marathon. It’s one of the best Garmin deals you can find.
The Epix 2 was on sale on Black Friday and Cyber Monday — on Amazon, it was priced as low as $449, but has since sold out — but you can still get it from Walmart for the same price.
Over the years, I’ve run four marathons and about a dozen marathons, but I also love hiking and skiing. Although I’ve used—and liked—the Garmin Forerunner series, its focus on solo running makes it less versatile for other outdoor activities.
However, the Epix 2 is designed to track all kinds of endeavors — and it works well, as I found while reviewing the Garmin Epix 2. Although it’s larger than dedicated running watches, I’ve come to appreciate the larger screen, which makes reading easier at a glance — Like when I wore them for a half marathon a few weeks ago. It was one of Garmin’s earlier watches to have an AMOLED display, which is sharper than the transflective screens found on older Garmin devices; I remember worrying that it wouldn’t be easy to read in bright sunlight, but fortunately I was proven wrong.
As with other Garmin watches, the Epix 2 doesn’t skimp on battery life. Although it doesn’t have as many smartwatch-like features as the Apple Watch, I can go for a week or more without worrying about having to recharge it.
The Epix 2 also has built-in music storage, so you can upload your own tunes or sync them to your Spotify playlists if you need a little extra motivation during your rides.
If you’re looking for something newer, the Garmin Epix Pro has a built-in flashlight, to help you see better in the dark; It can also be set to flash, so others can see you too – which is useful if you’re running in the dark. The Epix Pro also comes in three sizes, so if you don’t have a large wrist like mine, it may fit yours better.
