Hollandstrong is planning the ninth annual Ice Fishing Derby

WILTON – The 9th Annual Hollandstrong Community Ice Fishing Derby is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 27 at Lake Wilson in Wilton. Registration for this event is from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m., and promises big prizes with fishing and raffle tickets.

Registration is $5 per person and can be purchased on the day of the event or online in advance at www.hollandstrong.org on the store page. Raffle tickets can also be purchased online or at Robin’s Bait Shop.

All proceeds from this event will go to the Hollandstrong Community Foundation, which uses the funds to provide resources to the communities of RSU 9, MSAD 52 and RSU 73 in Michael Holland’s name.

Holland, a lifelong resident of Maine and a standout athlete in both football and baseball at Jay High School, was tragically lost at sea aboard the SS El Faro when the ship sank off the coast of the Bahamas during Hurricane Joaquin on October 1, 2015. Since then , Holland’s family established a scholarship fund as well as a foundation with the goal of honoring his legacy.

There is some uncertainty about the event in terms of ice quality for the day. Deb Roberts, event organizer and Holland’s mother, told the Livermore Falls Advertiser they will make the final call on Wednesday.

“It’s normal to see a bunch of igloos on Lake Wilson now,” she said. “They are starting to appear outside now. No one has come out to the center yet.”

Roberts has been providing updates on the event through his Facebook page, writing on Saturday, January 13: “The big question again this year is whether or not we will have enough ice by Derby Day – at this stage we are moving forward with planning as If we will. However, we are constantly monitoring the ice conditions and will make a final decision based on the ice conditions on (Wednesday, January 24).

Roberts followed up the post on Wednesday, January 17, by posting that Wilton has seen five consecutive days of temperatures below freezing.

The event features more than 40 sponsors, including Ambition Brewing, Androscoggin Bank, Calzolaio Pasta Co., Hannaford, Livermore Concrete, RB’s Meats, Shelly’s Hometown Market, Steve’s Family Market and many more.

The Comfort Inn and Suites in Wilton is also sponsoring this event by offering a discount on derby rooms by calling the hotel directly at (207) 645-5155. Roberts encourages those reserving a room for the event to mention the derby and a 20% discount will be applied to reservations.

Hollandstrong also thanks Robin’s Bait Shop, which donated a cash prize for drawing at the event. Every registrant is automatically entered into the event and does not need to participate in the derby to qualify for the cash prize.

Robin’s Bait Shop will also be hosting special derby hours, with the store open on Friday, January 26 from 6pm-9pm and Saturday morning from 4am-7pm.

Top prize for adults is $1,500 sponsored by Maine Maritime Academy graduates. In total, prizes for this event are $3,500 for adults (16 and under) and youth (15 and under).

Hollandstrong also extends special thanks to her featured sponsors True Educator Insurance: Horace Mann Agency, Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy, Maine Maritime Academy, JBRH Excavation, and Otis Federal Credit Union.
