Hideo Kojima says he decided to make Physint for fans after illness made him reconsider his priorities
Hideo Kojima dropped a bombshell at the end of January, announcing that – alongside developing Death Stranding 2 – he would also be returning to the spy-action genre that he put on the map with the Metal Gear series, in the form of Physint for PlayStation 5. And now, in a new episode of the HideoTube series In his own webinar, the designer explained how a period of illness and surgery — and thoughts of his own death — convinced him to “change his priorities” and do something fans had been asking him to do for years.
During the hour-long episode (thanks GameSpot), Kojima explained how after leaving Konami and founding his own independent studio Kojima Productions, he “wanted to do something new with my IP” and “challenge myself,” which led to Death Stranding . “Then, to create a franchise,” he continued, “I made Death Stranding 2. I wanted to do something newer, so I started working on OD. Since then, there have been a lot of new ideas.”
However, Kojima revealed that during those eight years, “every day on social media, from users all over the world, people were asking me to make another Metal Gear game and things like that.” But it wasn’t until after he became ill in 2020, amid the coronavirus pandemic, that those requests began to take on more significant meaning.
“It was also during the pandemic, so I was sick and isolated during all of that. I even had surgery. I thought, ‘I can’t anymore,'” he revealed. “I was at my lowest point and felt like I couldn’t get back into the games industry. She also wrote a will. And at that moment, I realized that people were dying. But I turned sixty last year. I will turn seventy last year. “10 years. I hope I never retire. However, if users want it so much, I thought I should change my priorities a little. I still want to do new things, but I decided to make an action-spy game.”
Physint, which Kojima described as “the icing on the cake” while revealing the State of Play on PlayStation, is still a big exit – Kojima has Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and the Microsoft-backed OD to focus on first. However, he has already dropped some hints at what might be in store, describing it as an “interactive game” that is also a film “in form, story, theme, cast, acting, costumes and sound.” Plus, it would be a real movie.
During his latest episode on HideoTube, Kojima expanded on this, explaining that “it’s going to be a game… if your mom walks in and sees you playing this game, she’ll think you’re watching a movie.” I’m sure how far we can go yet.” Previously, Kojima said his goal for Physint is to “cross the barriers between movies and video games.” Will he succeed? Given the timeline here, we’ll probably all be fairly old by the time We discover that.
