CELLSMART launches a global 5G performance mapping engine
CELLSMART, SmartCIC’s cellular intelligence division, has launched its global “Drive” initiative to test the operation of the world’s cellular networks and obtain local intelligence on 5G performance. The results will provide organizations with insights into the best connectivity options in a given region and support use cases for adopting fixed wireless access (FWA). The CELLSMART will begin its maiden journey in Cannes, France, and then pass through major cities in Spain and France in September 2023.
CELLSMART has equipped cars with custom test software, SIM cards and routers to test wireless LAN performance across Europe, North America and a growing number of destinations around the world. Each vehicle will capture 4G and 5G upload and download speeds and latency across key locations with test-by-test accuracy. CELLSMART’s custom testing software enables each vehicle to perform up to one test every 60 seconds and plot that data and log it in near real-time into a central database.
The vehicle will be driven by CELLSMART employees and partners with cellular intelligence, photos and comments captured and shared on LinkedIn.
Driving 2023 – Itinerary
– September 2023: Spain-France route
– October 2023: US Route 1 – East Coast
– November 2023: US Route 2 – West Coast and ends in Phoenix, Arizona
The Drive initiative was launched following the success of the CELLSMART Global Cellular Performance Survey, which used SmartCIC’s global network of 25,000 engineers in 106 countries to test cellular performance on the ground around the world. The latest survey revealed that the city of Oslo, Norway, leads Europe with the maximum 5G download speed of 1.12 gigabits per second. The data showed that the 5G FWA network has emerged as a viable alternative to fiber networks and LEO satellite solutions for enterprise access. CELLSMART has been testing, mapping and capturing local intelligence on wireless network performance around the world since March 2022.

The CELLSMART engine brings speed and agility to how you can test cellular networks at the granular level. Almost anywhere in the world we can deploy our test vehicle and capture 5G performance data in the field and across multiple networks. This enables service providers and enterprises to develop use cases for 5G and ensures they are using the highest performing cellular networks in the areas in which they operate. We are investing in ‘Drive’ because it will benefit the entire industry and advance FWA as a product category.
