Today Apple released the ninth beta of the upcoming tvOS 17 beta to developers for testing purposes, and the update comes a week after Apple released the eighth beta.
Registered developers can download the tvOS 17 update by signing up for the beta in the Settings app on their Apple TV. A registered developer account is required.
tvOS updates don’t usually get as much attention as iOS and macOS updates, and they’re never feature-rich, but tvOS 17 brings FaceTime to TV for the first time. Apple TV 4K can connect to an iPhone or iPad that acts as a camera, with the FaceTime interface appearing on the TV screen.
All the features of FaceTime including Center Stage are here to keep you front and center, plus new gesture-based interactions that let you use your hands to create on-screen effects. For example, if you make a heart with your own hands, the screen will display hearts.
The Split View app for Apple TV allows users to watch TV with friends and family using SharePlay, and there are controls to move calls between the TV and iPhone or iPad as needed. Third-party applications such as Zoom will also be able to take advantage of this functionality, so these applications will also work on the TV screen.
The Control Center on Apple TV has been revamped and it’s easier for users to access key settings and information, plus there’s a new feature that allows iPhone to locate a misplaced Siri remote.
tvOS also features a host of new aerial screensavers, adds support for third-party VPN apps, introduces Dolby Vision 8.1 on compatible devices, and more. details It can be found in our roundup of the Apple TV.
