Android 14 for Google Pixel has not been released yet
Instead of the stable release of Android 14 for the Pixel phones, as well as the Fold and the tablet, we got a series of Google Apps updates and a brand update this morning. Although unexpected, this is not the latest version of Google’s OS yet.

With Beta 5 released at the beginning of last month, Android 14 seemed on track for a stable launch in mid-August, which would have mirrored the rollout of Android 13 on August 15. At the time, Google said the “official release” was “only weeks away”. Beta 5 was followed by 5.1 and 5.2, with no other release in this cycle seeing a second patch. Although Beta 5 was “the last scheduled update in our Android 14 beta program,” Google doesn’t consider patches as scheduled, so there’s nothing unexpected about these bug fixes.
With no launch in August, the next window was moved to September 5th (since the first Monday of the month is a US holiday). Given that this window has now also passed, let’s take a look at the recent history of Android launches:
The most recent launch in recent memory is Android 12, which was released AOSP in early October followed by the Pixel launch on October 19 linked to the announcement of the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. However, in the case of Android 12, the last beta event (5) came a month ago (in September). Before that, Google was launched in August or September since 2016.
The fact that we don’t have a stable yet is complicated by the fact that Android 14 doesn’t appear to be a major release of visual or new features. Given the redesigned materials, it made sense why Android 12 took so long.
Android 14’s stage presence during the I/O 2023 keynote in May was unusually limited. We’ve been beta testing the lock screen clock and customization shortcuts for some time now, while the generative AI wallpapers hardly sound like a great offering (something I’d expect to debut on the Pixel 8 anyway before hitting older phones with December 2023) dropping the feature. ).
Speaking of Pixel Features Drops, there obviously wasn’t one today. There was also no one in September 2021 or 2022, with Google waiting until December in both years.
For those who have been waiting, Android 14 Beta 5.2 is now fully stable on the Pixel 7 series, tablet and foldable device. I’ve been using it as my daily driver for several weeks now without issues, which adds to the mystery of why it hasn’t been released yet.
It will be interesting to see if there will be Android 13 or Android 14 Beta 5.3 with the September security patch at this point. Depending on how many bugs were handled in the latter, that could indicate how far we are from a stable launch.
