A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention map shows that TN has the highest disease level in the US

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — New data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday shows that only one state is experiencing the highest level of the disease in the country: Tennessee.

The number of people going to the doctor for symptoms of respiratory illness — whether it’s the flu, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) or none of the above — increased before and after the holidays, based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention numbers.

However, only seven states, along with New York City, are now considered to have “very high” levels of the disease, according to the CDC. Of those states, Tennessee is the only state with the highest level of “very high” disease activity.

However, keep in mind that influenza is not the only disease spreading. Health officials said hospitalizations due to COVID-19 decreased by 9.6% last week, but deaths related to the coronavirus increased by 10.3% in the same week. Meanwhile, the CDC reports that more people have tested positive for RSV over the past few months.

In order to create the above maps, the CDC compared current data from health care providers with what is normal for that area outside of flu season. The data is based on the number of people who reported influenza symptoms to a health care facility — including fever, as well as a cough or sore throat — rather than laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza.

In other words, the data could include cases that turn out to be other respiratory diseases, such as Covid or respiratory syncytial virus, but cases could also be underreported, especially if people decide to stay home and fight the disease on their own.

Although we don’t have exact numbers, the CDC estimated two weeks ago that there are at least 10 million illnesses; 110,000 hospitalizations; And 6,500 deaths so far this flu season.
