13 Fishing Challenges Black Casting Rod Review

13 Fishing Challenges Black Casting Rod Review

It can be difficult to get a good rod at a good price. But here’s what I found in 13 Black Casting Rods for the Fishing Challenge. The company also has several high-end offerings, but you would be difficult, if not impossible, to find a more budget-friendly casting rod than the Defy Black. Packed full of quality components and priced between $59 and $69 for most models, this is a great rod.

Great value

The rod that is most comparable to the Defy Black (in terms of price and quality) that I have tested is the Ark Catalyzer casting rod. The Catalyzer also has four model options at $59. But that’s where the trigger lineup ends, as the Defy Black is available in 7 additional casting models as well as 2 rotating versions. (You can read my review of the 13 Fishing Defy Black Cranking Rod here.)

In total, there are 14 different types of Defy Black Casting Rods, plus 6 Defy Black Spinning Rod options, all priced under $100 – 14 out of 20 at $59.

Sturdy construction

Great value is, well, great. But not if the quality is not that good. Then it’s just cheap. Despite the Defy Black’s price, it’s not cheap at all. These casting rods feature stainless steel stepped guide frames with polished alconite inserts for smooth casting and durability.

The team at 13 Fishing used high-quality EVA foam for comfortable, split handles. There’s a lure keeper built into the bottom of the handle, and the rod is surprisingly light for this price point, thanks to the “durable, reactive 24-ton Japanese graphite material” that makes it a light, sensitive, and strong blank.

Personal experience with DEFY BLACK

I’ve been testing the Defy Black casting rod for nearly a year now, having received a 7-foot, 3-inch rod in shipment in March of 2023. Although I haven’t flipped any large boats with it (nor if anyone has Any size medium 7’3″ from any brand), I was pleased with its durability. It has held up well to regular use and handled the load of transporting several basses with no problem.

The foam handles look like new, maintaining their appearance better than cork handles, which get dirty much faster with regular use. The vacuum was powerful and sensitive, with more sensitivity than I expected for the price.

Final thoughts on the Lions Challenge

I don’t have anything negative to say about the Defy Black Casting Rod from 13 Fishing. At this price, you can’t complain. As for quality, I’ve fished with a lot of rods that cost twice the price, without anywhere near twice the rod.

With high-quality EVA handles, a solid reel seat, bait keeper, and a durable and efficient line guide system, you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck in the Defy Black Casting Rod. Kudos to 13 Fishing for taking what they’ve learned through years of research and development on their high-end rods and packing a lot of it into this budget-friendly option that any angler can benefit from.
